Donald Trump’s most recent warning to enforce an extra 100% tariff on Chinese goods has been labeled a “prime illustration” of US double standards, according to the Chinese government.
A representative of the ministry additionally remarked that the nation could implement its own undisclosed “retaliatory steps” if the US President follows through on his warning, emphasizing that the country was “unafraid” of a possible trade conflict.
This past Friday, Donald Trump retaliated at Beijing’s move to tighten its policies for foreign shipments of critical elements, alleging the Chinese leadership of “turning aggressive” and attempting to hold the international market “hostage”.
Furthermore, he warned to withdraw from a planned talks with China’s President President Xi, which was set for a summit in Seoul in the coming weeks.
The former president’s remarks on Friday shook financial markets, with the S&P 500 share index dropping nearly three percent, marking its largest decline since April.
The president’s words renewed concerns of a trade war between the two economic giants.
This past spring, the two sides had reached an agreement to eliminate significant levies on each other’s imports, which had raised the prospect of trade halting between the economic powers.
This left, United States levies on Chinese imports subject to an added thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while American products entering the Chinese market are subject to a import levy.
China’s latest remarks – issued by the Ministry of Commerce in the manner of written responses to press queries – echoed terminology from the height of the latest commercial tensions.
They criticised American limits on exports on chips and semi-conductors while justifying China’s own overseas sale regulations on key elements as “routine measures” to protect state interests and that of all nations.
Their representative stated that for “many years”, the America had “expanded the interpretation” of domestic safety, abused export control measures and “enforced” unfair treatments against Beijing.
“Resorting to import duty warnings is not the proper method to deal with Beijing,” their representative said.
“Beijing’s stance” on a import duty dispute has always been unchanging: we do not want one, but we are not afraid of one.”
Recently, China revealed it was tightening foreign shipment restrictions on key elements and further resources essential to advanced tech manufacturing.
This was seen as a significant step, as the state processes about 90% of the world’s rare earths, which are utilized in products such as renewable energy components and mobile phones.
New remarks from the US and China are being seen by observers as a method of strengthening positions in preparation for future trade talks.
Is not yet known whether a summit between the former president and President Xi, scheduled at a high-level meeting in South Korea before month’s end, will take place as planned.
